At Town Center Dentistry, we meet with hundreds of patients each year, many whom are less than excited to visit the dentist. Dental fear and anxiety are common. In fact, it is estimated that more than 15 percent of Americans do not visit the dentist because they are nervous and/or anxious. However, avoiding dental treatment can put one at risk for a slew of oral health issues. If you feel apprehensive about visiting the dentist, Town Center Dentistry provides sedation treatment to ensure your visit with us is comfortable and anxiety-free. We offer several sedation options and will work with you to find the most appropriate method for you.

Can You Benefit from Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry may be a good option if you have:
•    Dental phobia (fear of the dentist or dental treatment)
•    Dental anxiety
•    A strong gag relax
•    Low tolerance for pain
•    Very sensitive teeth
•    A hard time sitting still during dental treatment

Types of Sedation We Offer

Sedation dentistry can be used in almost any treatment, including dental cleanings, root canal, cavity fillings, and oral surgery. Prior to your procedure, Dr. Gonzales will select the sedation method that best suits your needs and that is most effective for the type of dental work you are receiving. We offer the following sedation options:

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is administered through a pill that you take before your procedure. The sedative pill allows you to feel relaxed during your procedure while remaining conscious. Because oral sedation does not relieve pain, a local anesthetic is normally used to numb the areas being treated. It can take about 24 hours for the full effects of oral sedation to wear off, which means you will need to arrange for someone to drive you home after your treatment.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas,” involves breathing in the nitrous oxide through a face mask. The nitrous oxide will put you in a very relaxed yet conscious state, allowing you to be comfortable yet still be able to communicate with your dentist during treatment. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off minutes after the rubber mask is removed. Immediately following treatment, you will be able to drive home and resume normal activities.

Intravenous (IV) Sedation

Intravenous (IV) sedation, also known as twilight sedation, is administered into the bloodstream via a sterilized needle in your arm or hand. The IV sedation will leave you conscious, drifting in and out of sleep. After treatment, you will have no memory of the procedure. The effects of IV sedation take approximately 24 hours to wear off, so you will need to arrange for someone to drive you home after your dental procedure. At Town Center Dentistry, we primarily use IV sedation as it is a safe and pain-free way to put our patients into a gentle sleep as our team goes to work.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

All sedation methods are proven to be safe and effective. Our sedation specialist Dr. Gonzales will be present during your procedure to ensure your safety and comfort. Prior to treatment, we will carefully review your medical history to ensure you are a suitable candidate for sedation dentistry.

Which method is best for me?

The best method for you will depend on your needs, medical history and the type of work you are getting done. Dr. Gonzales can discuss your options in detail with you during your initial consultation.

Will I feel any pain?

One of the main benefits of sedation dentistry is that patients do not feel any pain during treatment. If necessary, we may use a local anesthetic in addition to the sedation treatment to maximize your comfort.

Will I actually be asleep during treatment?

No, sedation dentistry will not put you to sleep fully. You will remain conscious yet feel very relaxed and tranquil. With sedation dentistry, you will feel very comfortable and yet still be able to respond to requests and ask questions to our team.

Can I drive to and from my appointment?

Patients who undergo oral sedation and IV sedation will need to have someone drive them to and from our office. Patients who undergo sedation via nitrous oxide are free to drive themselves home after work.

When can I return to work?

Oral and IV sedation patients are advised to take the rest of the day off from work following treatment. Most patients feel fine to return to work the next day. Patients who undergo sedation with nitrous oxide are free to return to work immediately after their treatment.

Are there any side effects with sedation dentistry?

Side effects with sedation dentistry include drowsiness and nausea. Drowsiness is temporary and most patients no longer feel nauseous once they eat something after their procedure.
